Pride and Prejudice’s 200th anniversary – Australian news roundup

The Pride and Prejudice 200^th anniversary was a public holiday in Australia (a day in lieu for the Australia day on the Saturday), and when I came back to work on Tuesday my sub-editor handed me Page 6 and Page 7 of The Sydney Morning Herald’s weekend ‘Spectrum’ (you can see some of it here).

So, we’ve seen a damn lot of popular youtube videos about Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen (I’m thinking Jane Austen’s Fight Club to start), but this one seems to have got hits far more quickly. For example, the first episode currently has 117,385 hits (and counting) since April 9th when it was posted on youtube this month. I’ve been watching it with curiosity as it builds- there’s currently five episodes, each about three minutes long, that brings our 18th Century novel into the present day and tells it from Lizzie’s perspective.

If you’re as big a fan of youtube as you are of Pride and Prejudice (like myself) then you will have most likely come across the New Biggest Thing, a hit video, made this year, that parodies Fight Club (you know, that awesome film with Brad Pitt and Edward Norton) using Jane Austen’s leading ladies.  It’s had over 1,110,000 views at the time of me publishing this post.  And if you haven’t seen it, then prepare yourself for some laughs at the video below!  And get ready for my analysis of the Pride and Prej elements.

As spoken about previously in other posts, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: Dawn of the Dreadfuls by Steve Hockensmith (no attribution to Jane Austen) is a pretty exciting development in the P&P&Z saga starting to emerge.  However, nothing got me quite so excited about it as this video. 

The best of Youtube Fan-Videos

Firstly, I have to apologise for the bulk of these videos being the 2005 Keira Knightley version, however most of the fan-made videos on youtube are made of clips from this version.  I have, however, endeavoured to include both the 2005 and the 1995 BBC version to give us some variety.  I chose these following videos based on originality, song choice, flow and however much I liked them.

You’re going to have to excuse me on a few counts.  I haven’t ever done a youtube video before.  I have a very low level of equipment (as in my light is really gloomy, and I only have a handheld camera).  I am having a bad hair year, and hadn’t brushed it/put on makeup.  I had just gotten out of bed (despite it being about midday!).
