I’ve been fairly paranoid that Pride and Prejudice and Zombies isn’t going to make the big screen. Mainly because everyone has been so hush-hush about it, and there has been barely a whisper of news about it for quite a few months if I’m estimating correctly. However, Natalie Portman our potential Lizzy (and by God is she beautiful), has told MTV at a comicon event that filming will most likely begin next year.
She had recently received a re-written draft of the script from David O Russell who is adapating and directing the film. Worryingly there’s a lot of criticism about his style and handling of staff across the web. Unfortunately there is, as of yet, no information about casting (and she hasn’t let slip) and the assumption made by MTV is that it’s too early in the day yet to expect anything new. Damn. I want to know who plays Darcy already!
She has co-starred with Scarlett Johansson before, but I don’t see SJ as a potential talent for this film. I can’t really think of many people that could work next to her without looking like disgusting hobbits.
As an Elizabeth Bennet, she is pushing it age-wise a little (she will be 30 when filming begins), but I don’t think this is much of a concern (she looks incredibly young). And while her nationality isn’t Pride and Prejudice friendly (she is of Israeli-American descent) as long as she can stick on a decent English accent it shouldn’t be a problem. That is acting after all.
At this rate, we might not want to expect the movie to hit theaters for quite some time. But hey, I’m willing to wait as long as it turns out well.
“It’s a really, I think, clever mash-up between genres. These women only obsessing over marriage is such a zombie kind of behavior. It’s kind of a perfect collision of genres,” Portman said about the new film, which her production company Handsomecharlie Films will be involved with.
